How to Tell Roughly How Old Your Door and Opener Are

Start at the opener. A label on the motor housing usually lists a manufacture date or serial number, and a wall button with no extras suggests an early model. Next, check for two small units mounted low on both sides of the opening; if they are missing, the opener probably predates sensors or was never upgraded.

Then look at the springs. Coils on a bar above the door are torsion springs; long springs stretched beside each side track are extension springs, more common on older homes. Thin single-layer panels, strap hinges, slide-bolt locks and exposed pulleys also point to an older installation.
